Although you hired us to get your LLC’s federal employer ID number (EIN), we cannot get the EIN unless a member or manager of the LLC signs and returns to us an IRS Form SS-4. The signed IRS Form SS-4 authorizes our legal assistant to contact the IRS for your LLC and get the EIN.
We don’t mind getting the EIN, but it is actually easier for you to complete the IRS’ online EIN wizard and get the EIN yourself than it is to for your LLC’s responsible person to complete and sign and return the IRS Form SS-4 to us. If you want us to get the EIN then a member or manager of the LLC must go to our web page called “How to Complete IRS Form SS-4” and follow the instructions. This page explains the form SS-4 and has a link to our DocuSign version of the SS-4 form.
If you don’t want to complete the IRS Form SS-4, go to the IRS’ online EIN wizard and get the EIN yourself. Any member or manager of the LLC that is a person can use the wizard to get an EIN for the LLC.
What to Do If No Member or Manager Has a U.S. Social Security Number
If no member or manager has a U.S. social security number then read my article called “Latest IRS Procedure for a Nonresident Alien to get an EIN” and follow the advice given in the article.
Protect Your EIN
When the LLC’s EIN is displayed on the IRS’ web page be sure to write down the id number and print the page for your records. Keep the EIN in a safe place.
If you lose your EIN, call (800) 829-4933 and select EIN from the list of options. Once connected with an IRS employee, tell that person that you received an EIN from the Internet but can’t remember it. The IRS employee will ask the necessary disclosure and security questions then give you the number.
